Thesis sitrep
I've been collecting some more data on the thesis:

Wed May 7 23:45:49 BST 2008
4741 lines 23246 words 163656 characters
thesis.log:Output written on thesis.dvi (84 pages, 643096 bytes).
33 fixmes
80 definitions
141 term-definitions
24 theorems
21 lemmas
6 corollaries
30 examples
143 bullet-points
A "term-definition" is a call to the macro \defterm, which I use to emphasize the term being defined. The count's not the same as the number of definitions because I often group the definitions of related terms into the same \begin{defn}...\end{defn} block. The lemmas, theorems etc are mostly other people's :-(

I like bullet points. They reflect how I think, and bullet-pointed text takes up more space on the page.

Sounds good - but what you really need is a sense of what proportion of the total that is! Some theses are 84 pages (mine wasn't).

I was wondering whether I should try to set you and Duncan up for competitive thesis writing. If you think that might help you / be mildly entertaining, drop him a line.

"33 fixmes" is the closest I get to that. I honestly have no idea how much work remains, and I don't think it's actually possible to know. Things that seem trivial have an annoying tendency not to be.

Don't set me up for competitive thesis writing with Duncan - he'd just beat me, and that would be depressing.

But honestly - this is me we're talking about, do you really think my thesis is going to be longer than average?

The bulk of the text's there, I think, although there are many gaps. I expect some of the stuff I've written will be eliminated or shortened as I find better ways of expressing it.

Sounds longer than almost of the things I've ever written. I would say anything I've ever written, but I did once manage to write a 200 page client report by accident when I was trying to explain something complicated involving SQL for an audience of judges and lawyers. There were diagrams and everything ;-)

The thesis is about three times as long as anything else I've written :-(

And somewhat more challenging to write than any of the reports I write :-(

I am sure you will get through it soon.

*hugs*

Hey, come on, that must be normal - how many Young People have writing of anything like the length of a thesis, or even half? And what else would you hope to have written? Birdshot had better not turn out to be a remotely comparable length!

Birdshot's about a third of the length of the thesis currently. Paradox topped out at 15K words, so that's what I'm aiming for.

I dunno - half my friends seem to have abandoned Teenage Novels, or 10,000-line operating systems they wrote for fun, or something.
